Martin J. Coyne of Plymouth, originally from Savin Hill in Boston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, at his home by the sea with his wife by his side.
Martin was born in Boston to Martin and Catherine (nèe MacDonald) Coyne. He grew up in Savin Hill as well as Pembroke.
Martin is pre-deceased by his sister Barbara, and his brother Thomas. He is survived by his wife Sylvana Myr, his brother Kevin Coyne and his wife Martha, his sisters-in-law Diane Coyne and Jacqueline Miller, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his entourage of special friends whom he always held close to his heart.
Martin was known for his storytelling, and his skills at showing everyone how to ski, he was known as “The Fun Uncle.” In his lifetime, he had completed marathons and triathlons and encouraged family members as well as friends to join him in these pursuits. He was also an avid alpine skier, runner, and a dedicated swimmer.
Martin and Sylvana, whom he had met when she was an undergraduate at the university, loved to travel the world together and partake in many cultures. They both loved boating, skiing, cruising, and especially entertaining family and friends at their mountain home in Canada and their house by the sea in Plymouth. July 3rd and New Year’s Eve parties were always a favorite.
Martin attended Northeastern University specializing in technical writing in the engineering program. Martin was one of the founding fathers of UMass-Boston. He ended his career administering the UMass physical plant, by leading many departments with his guidance.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at noon at the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 373 Court St., Plymouth. A period of visitation will follow the service from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in Martin’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
