Have an Atrius appointment on or after Feb. 5? You might want to read this.

The doctor will see you soon – at a new location.

That will be the case for nearly 30,000 Atrius Health patients in Plymouth and throughout the region as the health care provider’s planned consolidation of medical and other services now has a start date.

Atrius on Saturday began informing patients that its previously announced moves will take effect on Monday, Feb. 5. That means that its current locations at Cordage Park, Court Street, Long Pond Road and the Pinehills in Plymouth, along with Atrius facilities in Duxbury and Kingston, will all be housed under one roof at 36 Shops at 5 Way in The Grove at Plymouth retail plaza.

The $18 million, 48,000-square-foot building has previously been home to Jo-Ann Fabrics, Bridgewater Credit Union, and other businesses. Besides adult primary care and pediatrics, it will offer services such as cardiology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), optometry, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, rheumatology and urgent care. There will be an onsite pharmacy, too, with a drive-through window, and an eyeglass shop.

The move is a blow for Cordage Park, which relied on Atrius to fill a significant amount of its space, and raises concerns about added traffic on Long Pond Road, which has become increasingly congested because of residential development and business growth.

In a November Plymouth Independent story announcing the pending move, John E. McDonough, a professor in the Department of Health Policy & Management at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, said such consolidations are the new norm in the health care industry.

“What you are seeing in Plymouth is part of the trend of vertical integration in health care,” McDonough said. “It used to be horizontal integration, meaning hospitals would buy up other hospitals, insurers would buy up other insurers, pharmacies would buy up other pharmacies. Now these companies are buying into every aspect of care.”

In an email to patients on Saturday, Carrie Paskowski, Atrius’s primary care and site administrator, said that appointments scheduled for Feb. 5 or after “will be on the same day and at the same time as originally scheduled, but in our new Atrius Health Plymouth office.”

“We will contact all patients to confirm the location of appointments,” she added.

The move, Paskowski said, allows Atrius to “offer you a more comprehensive set of services at our new building.” Patients with questions about the changes should contact their provider directly, she said.
