Pro-Am lecture (Marshfield)
November 19, 2023 @ 1:30 pm
The Marshfield Historical Society will host our November Pro-Am lecture in the Marshfield Public Library – Lecture Room and feature Carolyn Ravenscroft, Archivist & Historian of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society (DRHS) as our speaker. Carolyn will discuss what South Shore women did to support our men who volunteered to support Abe Lincoln’ s Union troops in the US Civil War, some of whom suffered wounds that required hospitalization.
We will assemble at 1:30pm and welcome Carolyn Ravenscroft at 2pm whose academic research focused on how a local Duxbury woman, Charlotte Bradford, was a motivating force in creating a nursing career in Washington DC for women behind the lines. Charlotte’s extraordinary war experience spanned stints on Civil War transport ships, in major D.C. hospitals under her mentor, Dorothea Dix, and finally as the Matron for the Home for Wives and Mothers under the U.S. Sanitary Commission, per the DRHS website.
She and Dottie Melcher, our Curator, will also discuss the creation of local Women’s Benevolent Societies to assist broken South Shore families whose men were the warriors in this bloody conflict.
The Marshfield Public Library’s lecture room will be open on Sundays just for us! Use the side door on the north side of the Library building.
Suggested donation $10 for members $15 for others.
