James Martin Halunen was a lifelong resident of Plymouth, but for 77 years it was the tiny valley of Chiltonville that he called home. As a young boy, he would ride to Plymouth Beach on the handlebars of his big brother John’s bicycle. As a teenager, he would fish and hunt along the Eel River. To the very end, he and his wife Joan would look out over the fields each day to spot deer grazing or hawks hunting during the early morning hours or just before dark.
Jim was the youngest of six children born to Jack and Lorretta (Cronin) Halunen. He is survived by his sisters Fran (Souther) Barnes and Barbara (Jay) Bookman and brother John. He is predeceased by his sister Nelia and brother David.
Jim loved being on the ocean and spent many years fishing with his son, Michael, and best friend and cousin, Art Roberts. He would also set off to parts unknown with Joan, Michael, and his daughter, Lydia on the “Chiltonvillian” to explore the waters off Plymouth or his favorite island, Cuttyhunk, where he had lots of friends and continued to visit in recent summers. He also enjoyed early mornings “checking things out” at the boat ramp and Saturday breakfast with his buddies.
Jimmy loved to drive his earth movers and help people with their projects. His customers became his friends. But far and away, Jim loved hosting family reunion clambakes at his Chiltonville home. For one weekend every couple of years, Cronins would come from far and wide to visit, connect with each other and form lifelong bonds.
We sadly, yet gratefully said goodbye to Jim on April 11. He is survived by Joan, his wife of 51 years, Michael and his wife Christina and two granddaughters, Katherine and Iris, and Lydia and Scott Materna.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on May 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at his Clifford Road home. All are welcome. Bring your stories.
