Margie (Clausson) Burgess

Margie (Clausson) Burgess of Plymouth died peacefully on March 14 after a short illness. She was the wife of the late John Koukol and Kenneth Burgess. Born in Plymouth on Sept. 24, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Beecher and Jeanne (Maynard) Clausson. She was educated in the Plymouth schools and at the New England School of Banking. Margie was the beloved mother of Andrea Nedley and her husband, Scott, of Plymouth, and Margaret Fisher, and her late husband, Richard, of Virginia. She is the cherished grandmother of Christie Wilbur of Virginia. She also leaves her extended family, Elizabeth Perry and Dan Oberlander.

Margie, a lifelong Plymouth resident, grew up with hundreds of young foster siblings at her family’s home in downtown Plymouth. Later in life, she took in children of her own, opening her home to dozens of foreign exchange students attending high school in Plymouth and colleges in the area. Margie worked for Bank of Boston for many years and retired as a bank manager. Active in the Plymouth community, she served on the Capital Outlay Committee for the town and was a Town Meeting member. She also served on the Plymouth School Committee, Permanent School Building Committee, the Energy Committee, the Audit Committee and the Republican Town Committee. She was also a member of the Plymouth League of Women Voters. She served on the Capital Outlay Committee, the Obery Street Master Plan commission, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Plymouth Area Interfaith Community Alliance. In addition, she was a member of the Plymouth Rotary Club and was involved with coordinating events with Plymouth’s sister city, Shichigahama, Japan. More recently she was an active volunteer with the Spire Center for Performing Arts in downtown Plymouth.

She was also a world traveler with friends and acquaintances across the globe. She was an active and beloved member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions within the church.

Visiting hours in the Cartmell-Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home 373 Court St., Plymouth, will be held on Tuesday March 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, March 19, at 10 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 747 Federal Furnace Road, Plymouth. Burial will follow at Vine Hills Cemetery in Plymouth and a luncheon will be served at the church after the Vine Hills service. Memorial donations in her name or in lieu of flowers may be made to the Spire Center.
