Massachusetts has allowed guns in municipal areas for 400 years until Governor Healey made a change last October. Please keep in mind, there are employees that may or may not carry a weapon for personal safety or may choose to in the future. Our police chief told us he has had no problem with the 8,000 legal gun owners in Plymouth. Why are they now the problem? We now find out that five or six of the Plymouth Advisory and Finance committee members have a license to carry as well. One by one each of those legal gun owners volunteered in telling the public that personal fact a recent meeting on the subject.

Most that legally carry, carry quietly. They are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers and even serve on the Advisory and Finance Committee for hundreds of hours each year. Have you ever noticed the amount of dedication on that committee that is needed?  God bless their work and dedication.  But please, give me the water torture the kind of work they have to do to serve on that committee. That are a better human then I am. These kind of people are not the problem with weapons. It is the criminals do not follow our laws. We also may have female employees that feel they need for a weapon because they may have had a contentious relationship or divorce gone very bad. You may not feel you need a weapon now, but at some point in your life you may want a license to carry a weapon. Why would you limit your rights when on Plymouth municipal property? The Governor visited Plymouth two weeks ago, I am sure she had her security detail with her. Why should other public servants of Massachusetts (that are at public meetings) not have the ability to defend themselves just as the Governor can with her detail. Why is she different than other public officials, mayors, city councilors and others in Massachusetts that are dealing with an ever more contentious public that has much less respect for public decorum and life. We have very professional law enforcement, however sometimes waiting a few minutes on law enforcement is not possible to act to stop and shooter. And may God forbid that such a tragedy ever happen. But let us keep those looking to do harm guessing of who is not armed and who is armed. That is our best defense. Plymouth do not be deceived.

Editor’s note: While Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey last July signed into a law legislation that prohibits the carrying of firearms in some public building and parks, it was passed by the state Legislature. The law took effect in October.
