Susan Downs Kiernan

Susan Downs Kiernan, 67, of Sagamore Beach, passed away on Friday, May 24, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of Brendan Kiernan; loving mother of Gabriel Kiernan and his wife Audrey, of Plymouth; sister of Linda Fournier and her husband Brian, of Leominster; and aunt of Jenna Elliot of Lancaster and Jonathan Fournier, of Springwater, NY. She is also survived by in-laws in Ireland.

Born in Fitchburg on September 13, 1956, Susan was the daughter of the late William and Beulah (Downs) Costello and stepdaughter of the late Gerry Veautour. Susan grew up in Fitchburg and was a graduate of Fitchburg High School and the Monty Tech dental assistant program. She worked as a dental assistant in Plymouth, first for the office of Dr. Stephen Horn for 10 years and then for the office of Dr. Richard Karr for over 30 years. Susan was vibrant and fun-loving, with a terrific sense of humor that she often used to put patients at ease while they were in the dental chair.

Susan and Brendan spent their time in Sagamore Beach and at their second home in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland, where she loved to relax and visit with family.

She was the ultimate altruist, always putting others before herself. Always kind and caring to her family and friends, Susan was generous with her loved ones to a fault, and among family, her gift giving was an art. She loved music, dancing, painting, and was extremely crafty. Susan also loved to shop – her shoe and handbag collection is one for the record books!

An hour of visitation will be held at the Cartmell-Davis life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth, on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. 11a.m, followed by a memorial service in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Or plant a tree in her memory.
