December brought some gifts to local real estate agents in the form of healthy sales numbers – 108 Plymouth properties exchanged hands last month. The news was good for sellers, too. The average sales price (a combination of single-family homes, condominiums, and lots) was $638,000. Nine sales topped $1 million.
For buyers, high prices are obviously not encouraging. Nor are stubbornly steep interest rates. Despite three benchmark cuts by the Federal Reserve, and cooling inflation, borrowing remains relatively expensive. On Tuesday, Freddie Mac reported that the average rate for 30-year, fixed rate mortgage was just over 7 percent. That’s almost a full percentage point higher than in September. And there is little sign of a big drop coming soon.
