The Shady Roosters will start crowing a little early to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Spire, Tuesday, Dec. 31. The band will perform from 2 to 5 p.m., playing a blend of rockabilly, roots and blues, and old country in the casual, family-friendly atmosphere of the Spire’s lobby.

The performance is one of the band’s “Sunday Funday” events presented by Indieferm Brewing. The shows take place every other Sunday afternoon in the lobby of the downtown venture during the colder months. This time, the Sunday Funday event shifted to Tuesday to celebrate the holiday.

Paul Nixon, who sings and plays guitar, saxophone, and accordion in the band, also co-owns Indieferm (Independent Fermentation) Brewing in Plymouth. Nixon said Indieferm donates the beer, taking over the three taps at the Spire for Sunday Funday events. The Spire benefits from the sales, and Nixon’s brews get some exposure.

While the musicians do get paid, they aren’t in it for the money. That’s clear from the ticket price – just $5 cash at the door. The band is comprised of seven musicians and singers, who have been together for about 25 years and were previously known as Lonesome Jukebox. Besides Nixon, the official band members include Nathan Johnson on guitar, steel guitar and vocals, Mike Skinner on rhythm guitar and vocals, A.J. Johnson on lead vocals, Doug Lowry on bass and vocals, Paul Francis on drums, and Moose McCombs on tuba. Nixon said they often have “unofficial” musicians sit in on some songs.

If you’re planning for an early night, or just want to get a jumpstart on a longer celebration, the Shady Roosters will be ready to welcome you and 2025.
