Three people were burned, including one severely, after a deep fryer in the kitchen at the Plymouth Market Basket erupted, spewing hot oil across the room.

When Plymouth firefighters arrived at the store at 6:46 Thursday night, they found victims and they also spotted oil on the ceiling and a grease splatter 15 feet away from the fryer, according to Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley.

The firefighters immediately shut down the kitchen.

Two customers and one employee suffered burns in the incident, Foley said. The customer, a 79-year-old man, was severely burned and taken by ambulance to the Massachusetts General Hospital Sumner Redstone Burn Center.

A 31-year-old male employee and an 11-month-old child were taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration responded to the scene, according to Foley, who said the cause of the incident is under investigation by the Plymouth fire department and OSHA.

Market Basket corporate officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Ramon Polanco, an assistant store manager at the Plymouth store, said he couldn’t comment.
