I’ll bite – why aren’t there contingencies for a rain date for the Thanksgiving parade? I understand there are logistical challenges, such as overnight travel, commitments to other parades, and, of course, the ever-present issue of money. But here’s a thought:

Let’s keep it simple. If the forecast predicts a 90 percent chance of rain for parade day and only a 5 percent chance for the next day, call for the rain date. If both days are expected to be a wash, stick to the original schedule.

As for covering additional expenses, perhaps the local merchants – who stand to benefit most from a better turnout – could chip in for overnight accommodations if needed. Or, why not have collections during the parade for the crowd to contribute to a “rain delay” fund?

We had an absolute blast cheering on all the participants along Court Street and Chilton. Their smiles and energy brought so much joy, even in the rain. But let’s face it – Sunday morning would have been the better day.
